Paramatta Eels head coach Jason Reyles has officially announced his retirement and explained his decision

In a  heartfelt announcement that left players, fans, and staff stunned, Parramatta Eels head coach Jason Reyles has officially declared his retirement from coaching. Speaking at a press conference held at CommBank Stadium, Reyles explained his decision with candor and emotion, reflecting on his journey and what ultimately led him to step away.

“This has been one of the most difficult choices of my life,” Reyles began. “Coaching the Parramatta Eels has been an incredible honor, but after much thought and reflection, I know it’s the right time to step back. This club deserves someone who can give absolutely everything every single day, and right now, I need to prioritize other parts of my life.”

Reyles, who took the helm of the Eels with high expectations, admitted the role had demanded everything from him. Though he cherished the challenge and the responsibility, he acknowledged that the grind of professional coaching had taken a personal toll. “Rugby league is relentless. The preparation, the scrutiny, the travel—it’s a lifestyle as much as a job. And while I’ve loved every moment of competing at this level, I’ve also realized how much I’ve missed with my family. My kids are growing up fast, and I want to be there for the moments I can’t get back.”

Throughout his tenure, Reyles became known for his no-nonsense approach, instilling discipline and accountability in his players. He also championed the development of younger talent, leaving behind a foundation he believes will serve the club well into the future. “What I’m proudest of is seeing our younger guys come through, watching them embrace the culture we’ve built here. That’s the real legacy I wanted to leave behind.”

He also pointed to his health as part of his decision. Long seasons and the stress of high-pressure matches had begun to weigh heavily. “I’ve always preached balance and wellbeing to the players, but at some point, I had to recognize that I wasn’t following my own advice. This decision is as much about my long-term health as it is about my family.”

The announcement prompted an outpouring of emotion from within the club. Players praised Reyles for his leadership and honesty, with many noting how his belief in them extended beyond the game itself. “He cared about us as people first, not just as players,” said one veteran. “That’s rare, and it meant everything.”

Supporters of the Eels, often described as one of the most passionate fan bases in rugby league, expressed mixed emotions—disappointed to see him go, but grateful for his service. Reyles addressed them directly, his voice firm but warm: “To the Blue and Gold Army—thank you. Your passion is the heartbeat of this club, and it’s something I will carry with me forever.”

Although stepping away from head coaching duties, Reyles hinted that his story in rugby league might not be over. He suggested he could remain connected to the game in a mentoring or development role, but emphasized that, for now, his priority would be family.

“This isn’t a farewell to rugby league,” he concluded. “It’s just a change of direction. I’m leaving with no regrets, only gratitude. Coaching this team has been the greatest privilege of my career.
