Collingwood Unveils Statue Honouring Peter Daicos: A Timeless Tribute to “The Macedonian Marvel”

The Collingwood Football Club has officially unveiled a bronze statue immortalising one of its greatest ever players — Peter Daicos. The emotional ceremony, held outside the Magpies’ spiritual home at the AIA Centre, drew hundreds of fans, past teammates, and club legends to celebrate a man whose name is synonymous with brilliance, creativity, and Collingwood pride.

Daicos, affectionately known as “The Macedonian Marvel,” redefined what was possible on a football field throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. His incredible goal sense, uncanny accuracy, and flair made him one of the most electrifying players the AFL has ever seen. The statue, depicting Daicos in his iconic Collingwood guernsey mid-kick, captures the essence of his magic — a player capable of bending the game to his will and thrilling the black-and-white faithful week after week.

Club president Jeff Browne spoke with deep respect about Daicos’s enduring legacy, describing him as “a player who inspired generations and embodied everything it means to be a Collingwood person.” He added, “Peter wasn’t just a footballer; he was a showman, a magician with the ball, and a symbol of the club’s fighting spirit. His legacy lives on not only through this statue but through every young player who dreams of wearing these colours.”

Daicos himself was visibly moved as the statue was revealed. Standing beside his family — including his sons Josh and Nick, both current Collingwood stars — he reflected on the honour with humility and gratitude. “This club has been my life,” he said. “To see this statue here, surrounded by the people who have supported me from the start, is beyond words. Collingwood has given me everything, and I hope I gave a little bit back.”

The moment carried extra meaning for the Daicos family, with Nick and Josh continuing their father’s legacy on the field. Fans couldn’t help but draw parallels between Peter’s dazzling highlights and the modern brilliance of his sons, who have become key figures in Collingwood’s new era of success.

Supporters gathered early for the unveiling, many donning vintage black-and-white scarves and jerseys from the 1990 premiership year — a season forever etched in history thanks to Daicos’s pivotal role. The statue, created by acclaimed sculptor Mitch Mitchell, stands proudly alongside other Collingwood greats, ensuring that future generations will always remember the player who could make the impossible seem effortless.

As the curtain fell and the crowd erupted into chants of “Daicos! Daicos!”, the emotion of the occasion was unmistakable. It wasn’t just about honouring a footballer; it was about celebrating Collingwood’s soul — the artistry, passion, and pride that Daicos embodied every time he pulled on the guernsey.

With his statue now standing tall at the club’s home, Peter Daicos’s legend is quite literally cast in bronze — a permanent reminder that some heroes never fade, they simply become immortal.
