NHL All-Star Player from Montreal Canadiens Center Nicholas Suzuki joins Florida Panthers, My Reason for Choosing Panthers over Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs is….
In a move that has stunned the hockey world, NHL All-Star center Nicholas Suzuki has officially signed with the Florida Panthers, leaving behind the Montreal Canadiens and turning down the Toronto Maple Leafs in the process. The announcement sent shockwaves across the league, as Suzuki was long considered the cornerstone of the Canadiens’ rebuild. However, when speaking about his decision, Suzuki made it clear that this was about more than just hockey—it was about the full picture.
“It wasn’t easy at all,” Suzuki admitted during his first press conference as a Panther. “Montreal is a place that shaped me. I grew up as a player there. The fans, the city—they mean a lot to me, and I’ll always be grateful for everything they gave me. But at the end of the day, I had to make the choice that was best for me both professionally and personally.”
So why Florida? Why leave a hockey-crazed city like Montreal, or pass up a chance to play for his hometown team in Toronto?
“For me, it was about fit and opportunity,” Suzuki explained. “The Panthers really sold me on their vision. They’re building something here that I wanted to be part of. They’ve been right there, knocking on the door for a Stanley Cup, and you can feel the hunger in this organization. From the front office to the locker room, they believe in winning now.”
The Panthers made it clear that they view Suzuki as a central piece of their championship puzzle—not just a temporary addition.
“When I spoke with their GM and coaching staff, they didn’t just talk about goals and assists,” Suzuki continued. “They talked about leadership, about being part of a core that could push this team to the next level. That stuck with me. They wanted me to lead here, to be part of something special.”
As for Toronto, a team many assumed would be high on his list given his Ontario roots, Suzuki’s answer was refreshingly honest.
“I get it—everyone expected me to consider the Leafs because it’s home. But there’s a lot that comes with playing there. The pressure, the media, the constant noise—it can be overwhelming,” he said. “I wanted to focus on playing hockey, on competing for a Stanley Cup without all the distractions. Florida gives me that. It’s a place where I can play my game, stay focused, and enjoy the process.”
Suzuki also mentioned the lifestyle and family considerations, highlighting the appeal of Florida off the ice.
“I won’t lie—the weather doesn’t hurt,” he said with a grin. “But beyond that, it’s a great place to live. It’s a place where I can relax and just enjoy hockey and life. At this stage of my career, that balance really matters.
