Leaving was the only decision, former Collingwood football head coach Nathan Buckley revealed a shocking reasons why…

Former Collingwood Football Club head coach Nathan Buckley has opened up about the real reasons behind his departure, admitting that “leaving was the only decision” he could make. In a candid reflection, Buckley revealed that the pressures of the job, internal challenges at the club, and personal tolls on his health and family made his 2021 exit inevitable.

Buckley, a Collingwood icon who led the Magpies as both a champion player and long-serving coach, shocked fans when he announced his resignation midway through the season. At the time, the decision was framed as a mutual parting, but in his recent comments, Buckley made it clear that the reality was far more complex.

“Leaving wasn’t just about results on the scoreboard,” Buckley explained. “There were a number of factors that built up over time—political issues within the club, the constant spotlight, and the strain it put on my personal life. In the end, I felt the best decision for myself, my family, and the team was to step away. Staying any longer wouldn’t have been fair on anyone.”

His words shine a new light on a turbulent period in Collingwood’s history. The club had endured a series of off-field controversies, most notably the fallout from the “Do Better” report into systemic racism, which placed significant pressure on both the administration and football department. Buckley admitted that navigating these challenges while still trying to lead the team on-field became an impossible balancing act.

“Football clubs are more than just what happens on match day,” he said. “When off-field issues dominate the conversation, it takes a huge emotional toll. I tried to give everything I could to shield the players and focus on performance, but there came a point where the weight of it all was too much.”

Buckley also revealed the personal cost of coaching at one of the AFL’s most scrutinized clubs. “My family bore the brunt of it. Coaching Collingwood is an all-consuming role—you’re never out of the headlines, and the pressure never stops. I reached a point where I had to prioritize my health and the people closest to me. That clarity made the decision simple, even if it was hard emotionally.”

Despite the difficulties, Buckley expressed no bitterness toward the Magpies and instead gratitude for his long association with the club. “I’ll always love Collingwood. It’s been my home for most of my adult life, and I’m proud of what we achieved. But there’s also a time to acknowledge when the journey has run its course.”

Since stepping down, Buckley has pursued a career in media and has remained an influential voice in AFL commentary. He says the break from the intensity of coaching has given him perspective and renewed energy. “I still love the game. I love seeing young players develop and thrive. But for now, I’m enjoying a different role, one that allows me balance I didn’t have before.”

For Collingwood supporters, Buckley’s revelations provide insight into just how heavy the burdens of leadership can be, particularly at a club where expectations are sky-high. His story underscores the reality that sometimes, even legends must walk away for their own well-being.
