In a revelation that has surprised many rugby league fans, former Parramatta Eels head coach Trent Barrett has opened up about the shocking reasons behind his departure from the club, admitting that “leaving was the only decision” he could make at the time. Known for his honesty and intensity, Barrett shed light on the internal struggles, personal challenges, and overwhelming pressures that ultimately forced his hand.
Barrett, a former NSW Blues representative and respected playmaker during his playing career, took on the Eels’ coaching reins with high expectations. His appointment was seen as a bold move by Parramatta’s administration, who believed his tactical insight and modern approach could push the club to long-awaited premiership glory. However, his time at the helm was marred by inconsistent results, injuries to key players, and off-field challenges that created a volatile environment.
In a candid interview, Barrett explained that the weight of the role became unsustainable. “Coaching in the NRL is never easy, but at Parramatta, the pressure was relentless,” he said. “There were expectations from the board, the fans, and the players, and when results didn’t come, the scrutiny grew heavier. After a while, it began to take a toll on my mental health and my family. Walking away was the hardest choice I’ve ever had to make, but it was also the only choice.”
Barrett revealed that behind the scenes, relationships within the club had become strained. Differences over recruitment strategies, selection policies, and the direction of the team created friction between him and senior officials. “It wasn’t about not caring or not trying,” Barrett explained. “I gave everything I had, but when you’re not all aligned in vision, it becomes very difficult to move forward. That’s when I knew my time was up.”
He also touched on the personal sacrifices coaches are forced to make in the high-pressure world of the NRL. “You miss birthdays, family events, and so much of everyday life. My family supported me through it all, but I could see the impact it was having on them too. At some point, you have to ask yourself if it’s worth it, and for me, the answer was clear.”
Despite the difficult ending, Barrett expressed gratitude toward the Eels and their supporters. “Parramatta is a proud club with one of the most passionate fan bases in the game. I’ll always be thankful for the opportunity I had there and for the players who gave everything week in, week out. My departure wasn’t about them—it was about me knowing my limits and making the right call for my own well-being.”
Since leaving the Eels, Barrett has remained connected to the game through assistant coaching roles and media commitments, where his knowledge and experience continue to be valued. While he hasn’t ruled out a future return to head coaching, he admits that for now, his focus is on balance.
“Sometimes stepping away is not a sign of weakness but of strength,” he concluded. “Leaving Parramatta was painful, but it was the right decision—for me, my family, and the club.”
