The initiative, called Tork’s Home, is a personal project that Torkelson says has been years in the making. In a heartfelt statement during a press conference at Comerica Park, Torkelson shared that he was inspired to give back after witnessing the growing number of people living without stable housing in Detroit.
“I drive through the city every day and see people struggling just to find a safe place to sleep,” Torkelson said. “I’m incredibly lucky to be where I am in life, and I felt a responsibility to use some of that good fortune to make a lasting impact.”
The shelter, located in a historic building just outside Midtown, will include over 50 private living units, a communal kitchen, mental health counseling services, job placement programs, and a full-time medical staff. It will also provide resources for addiction recovery, financial education, and permanent housing assistance.
Construction is already underway, with plans to open the doors by spring 2026. The renovation is being handled by a local Detroit architecture firm, with input from community leaders and nonprofit organizations who specialize in homelessness prevention. Torkelson is partnering with several local groups, including the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, to ensure the facility provides holistic support and long-term solutions—not just temporary shelter.
City officials have praised the move, calling it a “game-changing” investment in Detroit’s future. Mayor Mike Duggan expressed his gratitude during a joint press event, stating, “What Spencer Torkelson is doing here is nothing short of extraordinary. He’s using his platform and personal wealth not just for charity, but for transformation.”
This isn’t Torkelson’s first foray into philanthropy. Since joining the Tigers as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, he’s supported numerous youth baseball programs in Michigan and Arizona, and frequently volunteers with local food banks. But this latest move marks his largest and most ambitious charitable effort yet.
Torkelson remains humble about the project, stating that it’s not about publicity or praise, but about doing the right thing. “Everyone deserves dignity, safety, and a chance to get back on their feet,” he said. “If I can help make that happen—even for just a few people—that’s a bigger win than anything on the field.”
