When I began my recruitment journey as the No. 1 American college basketball player, I knew every decision I made would be closely watched. Programs with rich histories, iconic coaches, and national exposure came calling. Duke, with its blue-blood reputation and championship pedigree, was naturally a major part of the conversation. But after months of reflection, conversations, campus visits, and soul-searching, I made a decision that felt right not just for my career, but for my life. I have officially committed to the University of South Carolina, and I want to share why choosing the Gamecocks over the Duke Blue Devils and other powerhouse programs was the best decision for me.

 

First and foremost, South Carolina believed in me as more than just a ranking or a headline. From the very beginning, the coaching staff made it clear that they valued my development as a complete person—on and off the court. Every conversation wasn’t just about points, minutes, or hype. It was about growth, leadership, accountability, and building something meaningful. That genuine connection stood out immediately. I wasn’t being recruited to fit into a system; I was being recruited to help build one.

 

The opportunity to make history played a huge role in my decision. Duke has banners, trophies, and decades of dominance. While that legacy is impressive, South Carolina offers something different: the chance to elevate a program and leave a lasting imprint. I want to be part of something transformational. I want future players to look back and say this was the moment the Gamecocks reached a new level. That challenge excites me more than simply following a well-worn path.

 

Another major factor was trust in the coaching vision. The Gamecocks’ coaching staff laid out a clear plan for my development—from my freshman year to the professional level. They showed how my game would be expanded, how my weaknesses would be addressed, and how my strengths would be maximized. At Duke, competition is fierce and expectations are sky-high, but at South Carolina, I felt a deeper level of personal investment. I knew I wouldn’t be just another elite name on a loaded roster; I would be a cornerstone.

 

The environment and culture around the program also mattered greatly. South Carolina has built a family-oriented culture where players push each other, support each other, and grow together. During my visit, I saw players holding each other accountable in practice and encouraging one another off the court. That brotherhood is something I value deeply. I want to compete at the highest level, but I also want to enjoy the journey and feel supported every step of the way.

 

Academics and life beyond basketball were also important in my decision. South Carolina provides strong academic support and resources that prepare athletes for life after the game. Basketball will always be a huge part of my life, but I understand how important it is to be prepared for whatever comes next. The university made it clear that my future mattered as much as my present.

 

Finally, the fans and the community played a role I can’t overlook. The passion surrounding Gamecock athletics is real, intense, and growing. I felt welcomed, embraced, and genuinely wanted. I could picture myself playing in front of that crowd, wearing garnet and black, and representing something bigger than myself.

 

Choosing South Carolina over Duke wasn’t about rejecting greatness—it was about defining my own. I’m proud to be a Gamecock, ready to work, ready to lead, and ready to help take this program where it’s never been before.
